Case Studies

Our products in action

Our fully-engineered products are used all over the world. Datakey Electronics keys and tokens hold from 1Kb to 1GB of data, mating with receptacles and Keycepticals® that offer industry-standard interface protocols. We can also provide Development Kits to help OEMs create and test their products – and can work with you to design custom solutions as well.

Here are just a few examples of the ways our rugged memory keys are used in commercial, industrial, medical and military applications.

Traffic Light Controllers
Caltrans, the organisation responsible for designing, building, operating and maintaining the road network across California, implemented the DK1000 Serial Memory Key for on-site engineers to reprogram traffic light control modules. The system was later introduced by other states and, more recently, has been updated by a custom-designed product from Datakey Electronics. Read more…

Exercise Equipment
SCIFIT’s exercise equipment is activated by a SlimLine™ SST64Kb Token that contains a personalised exercise routine. When a gym member inserts the token, the exercise equipment automatically sets a workout with a duration, program and resistance level to suit the individual user. Individual performance is also stored on the token. Read more…

DNA Analysis
eGene has created a genetic analysis system that uses disposable Gel Cartridges as part of its testing process. The company uses the SST2Kb Token to activate their equipment and monitor the viability of the cartridge. Because the equipment is used in a medical environment, it was also important that the token could be sterilised. Read more…

Catheter Calibration
Endocardial Solutions produces heart monitor systems that use a balloon catheter. Each catheter is a single-use device that needs to be precisely calibrated before use. To achieve this, the company uses the IST16000 Token in a sterilisation-resistant plastic, providing a system that is both affordable and easy to use. Read more…

Patient Monitoring
GMP Wireless Medicine is the first company to create a wire-free electrocardiogram. Many of these ECG devices can be used in a single hospital ward, although each transceiver must be ‘paired’ with its associated monitor. By using a Token that is moved from the transceiver to the monitor, it is possible to calibrate the two devices quickly and safely. Read more…

Sensor Calibration and Control
The fibre-optic medical sensors manufactured by Washington-based RJC need to be calibrated before use. Having initially produced their own tokens, the company switched to the Datakey Electronics LCS Token, which is rugged enough to be sterilised and affordable enough to be disposable. Read more…

Fuel Dispensing
Our products are tough and secure enough be used for either attended or unattended fuelling. The standard LCK series of keys is used in the MegaTrak Series 3000 equipment favoured by the US Army, while a custom-produced rugged memory key is used in the unattended equipment manufactured by Gasboy International. Read more…

Commercial Catering
Merrychef, a UK company that makes microwave and combination ovens for commercial use, approached Nexus UK to develop a system for reprogramming their equipment with new recipe applications. We created a solution that initially used a memory key and now employs the higher-capacity SFT2Mb token, which is programmed at the company’s head office and sent directly to end-users who no longer need to enter hundreds of individual keystrokes whenever a new recipe is introduced. Read more…

Feed Management System
Using the SFK1Mb Key has given Digi-Star an affordable and rugged off-the-shelf data transport device for farmers. Animal feed can be mixed and weighed using equipment programmed by a ‘recipe’ on the key. The same memory key also stores information about the exact amounts dispensed. Read more…

Load Monitoring to Reduce Loss

Both Kraft Foods and Accurate Measuring Systems (AMS) employ rugged memory keys to prevent milk loss. Traditional measurement systems use a ‘dip stick’ that can be misread, with the likelihood of rounding errors when readings are added up. By using memory keys, data is captured automatically and stored securely on a device that can cope with the harsh farm environment. Read more…

Cashless Vending
Four Square, part of Mars GB, produces the KLIX range of drink and snack vending machines. They use the LCK1000 Key to give end-users a way of buying products without using cash. The key is simply loaded with credit by the user, with purchases made from any authorised vending machine in the building. Read more…

Secure Gaming
World Touch Gaming, which creates gaming and lottery machines, uses the IET Series CryptoMemory Token to store information that activates their machines and unlocks special features. This gives management and maintenance staff personalised access to each piece of equipment whilst maintaining security. Read more…

Health monitoring and Control
BioMass data collection kiosks are used in schools across the USA to measure body fat and Body Mass Index as part of a national fitness programme. SSX SlimLine™ Tokens are issued to individuals to store their personal data, with a separate Token used by an administrator to collect the results. Read more…

Parking Meters
Parking meters produced by Duncan Industries are used in over 60 countries. To discourage vandalism and theft, the company approached Datakey Electronics to develop a ‘CashKey’ that was tough enough to handle repeated use in an outdoor environment. The resulting product, which can be installed in conventional-looking meters, has been featured in Newsweek magazine. Read more…

Secure Voice Communication
Datakey Electronics and the US Department of Defense worked together to create STU-III: a secure telephone unit that would encrypt or ‘scramble’ voice calls. Users simply insert a pre-programmed KSD64A Crypto Ignition Key into each phone. STU-III keys are used on phones made by AT&T, Martin Marietta, Motorola and RCA. Read more…

Secure Data Transfer
Every day, the US Armed Forces needs to transfer cryptographic code to communications equipment on vehicles, ships and planes. Datakey Electronics created the KSD-1 memory plug, which meets military specifications by being water resistant, heat resistant and cold resistant – yet is small enough to fit in portable communication devices.
