Nexus GB, the exclusive UK distributor of Datakey Electronics’ range of portable memory products, has launched a new Web site to mark its campaign to educate design engineers about the drawbacks of using consumer style memory products in their work.
The portable storage device has now become so ubiquitous that it has entered the inflation basket – the selection of products the Government uses to measure inflation. It is this popularity that has prompted Nexus to launch their campaign. The web site features product guides, case studies and downloadable examples of the tokens and receptacles in practice.
“Portable memory is increasingly becoming a component level purchase,” explained Nexus operations director, Michael Barrett. “However, far too many businesses are integrating USB sticks or camera cards into devices meant for a B2B market. As a result, by the time the product climbs off the drawing board and into the hands of the end user, the portable memory device is often obsolete. By using rugged memory keys or tokens this problem can be avoided entirely.”
Although memory tokens are more expensive per kB of memory than consumer products, they can actually prove to be cheaper when integrated into an application. This is the result of a tendency amongst engineers to over specify the memory in camera cards and USB sticks when in doubt. However, in practice, most applications don’t need a great deal of capacity. The consultancy offered by the Nexus team means that the correct memory key or token can be provided to an exact specification.

About Nexus GB: Established in 1986 Nexus GB is Datakey Electronics’ UK and Ireland exclusive distributor for portable, rugged keys and tokens containing non-volatile memory. These reliable and re-programmable items provide data transport, security, and access control solutions even in extreme environments where other methods, such as USB memory, would not survive. Furthermore, distinct from consumer-like memory solutions, they are a well established product that will not become obsolete as technology progresses. As a result, they are commonly used by design engineers working on long term projects, with more than three million units currently in UK service.
